User is trying to download some files or documents from an Intranet or Internet web site(s) and can't. May get some error message mentioning "security settings." | The security settings in IE or Netscape may have been changed to a higher level. | Change the settings to a lower security level and try again. |
00040 |
An NT workstation will not boot up, but sits at a DOS prompt with this
error: "Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing
or corrupt: |
The Boot.ini file on the root of the hard drive is missing or corrupt. | Copy a good version of Boot.ini from a backup or possibly a similarly configured NT workstation. |
00041 | Can't remove printer drivers. | If HP Jetadmin utils have been installed, you may not be able to remove printer drivers from Control Panel/Printers. If you check the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and you see "HPPROPTY" you know this utility is installed and running, and needs to be removed. | Check Technet article Q190628 or go to this link REMVJET.TXT |
00042 | Lotus Notes mail notification does not work unless you currently have Notes as the active Window. Normally if "visible notification" is checked in User Preferences a notice should pop up when mail arrives, regardless of what the current active application window is. | Don't know what causes this. | The time I ran accross this problem I disabled the visible and audible notification, closed Notes, reopened Notes, and reenabled both notifications again. The problem was resolved. |
00043 | On a warm boot (reboot) you get a "1782 - disk controller failure" message on a Compaq Deskpro 2000/5200 PC. If you shut the power off and then power it back on after a few seconds it boots fine and works ok. There seems to be no other trouble with the hard drive. | The Rom Bios needs to be upgraded. | Use the latest Rompaq Rom Bios upgrade from Compaq to upgrade the Bios. The latest version at this time (1/21/00) is version 98.05.01. |
00044 (Applies to Office 97 or before and typically on a network) | When trying to save a file in Word the user gets this message: "THERE HAS BEEN A NETWORK OR FILE PERMISSION ERROR. THE CONNECTION MAY HAVE BEEN LOST." | This happens when the path is too long. It is a known problem in Word and there is a fix. |
If the Registry entry below already exists, change the number from 0 to
1. If it does not exist, add it as given below. Microsoft's Technet
article Q171406 explains in more detail. Registry entry should be:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Office\8.0\Word\Options] "DontUseUNC"=dword:00000001 |
00045 | Mail icons occasionally show up on another user's Notes desktop. | This can occur when a you click on an icon that appears in the subject line of a mail message. This icon is linking back to a document in a mail file that you do not have access to. However, you may have been granted access to the person's Notes calendar. If this condition occurs, the person's mail icon will be added to your desktop. | Although this is confusing, icons that appear on your desktop can easily be removed by selecting the icon and pressing the delete key on your keyboard or by right clicking on the icon and selecting the "Remove from workspace" option. |
000080 | User tries to open Notes but the hour glass just sits and sits and sits. I believe this is even before the login box opens. | The user has a copy of the "pablite.nsf" (Public Address Book Lite) set as one of their local address books. Because it is so big (the one I saw was almost 600Mb) it takes forever to open. | Close Notes, rename the C:\Notes\data directory, make a new C:\Notes\data directory, copy everything EXCEPT the nablite.nsf file into the new directory. Now open Notes and remove the "nablite.nsf" from Files/ Tools/User Preferences/Mail/Local Address Book. |
000081 | Can't get the ATI Rage Pro drivers to install on a Dell Optiplex GX1 PC. It keeps defaulting back to a standard VGA video dirver. | Without the SP3 or SP4 updates on the NT workstation, this will keep happening. | Install the SP4 (service pack 4 for NT) updates, reboot, and then install the ATI Rage Pro drivers from Dell. Don't use the ATI drivers that come with NT. |
000082 | User is trying to get to certain web sites that others can get to. They can get out onto the internet ok, but certain Intraweb sites fail. Error says something like "Connection with the server could not be established". | The TCP/IP configuration is not correct. Older settings for the "Gateway" and "DNS" settings in the TCP/IP configuration are set instead of newer settings. This explains to some degree why not all sites are blocked. | Remove any gateway ip addresses and enable DNS, putting in the correct Domain, the correct Domain Suffix Search Order , and a host name. |
000084 | User gets an "out of environment space" error message when running a batch file. | This will happen when the environment space is too full to accept any other environment settings (e.g. "SET WINSYS=C:\WIN95\SYSTEM"). Type "set" from a DOS prompt to see all the environment settings. |
From Technet Article #Q93363 1. Edit the SYSTEM.INI file with a standard ASCII text editor, such as Microsoft Windows Notepad. 2. Locate the [NonWindowsApp] section and add the line "CommandEnvSize=" (without the quotation marks). Assign a value between 160 and 32,768 following the equal sign. For more information on this switch, please refer to the SYSINI.WRI file. I used 2048 as an amount that seemed to give the necessary available space. |
000086 | Tab key in Excel moves many columns to the right instead of just one. | The "Transition navigation keys" setting in Options has been checked. | Go to Tools/Options/Transiton and uncheck the "Transition navigation keys" check box. |
000087 | User is trying to dial in to their Pinnacle connection (using Smartcom) and it seems to dial in ok, but they don't see anything on the terminal screen once it's connected. | The user scrolled all the way to the right in their terminal screen so they can't see what's being displayed once they've dialed in. | Scroll all the way back to the left. Also be sure you're scrolled to the bottom of the terminal screen or they may not see the current prompt. |
000088 06/01/00 | Certain parts of Notes databases have the bottoms of text cut off. It's like the last few lines of pixels are not displayed on each line. I saw this on a Dell laptop. | The video drivers were set at "Large Fonts" (125% normal size). | Reset back to "Small Font" in the video display settings. This may be specific to those video drivers. I have not had time to do comparison testing. |
000089 | When trying to FTP files from a Unix server to a location on a Novell server the transfer doesn't work right. The target file shows up, but it is 0 bytes, so it really didn't transfer. | User's volume restriction limit on the Novell server is filled up. | User will need to delete old files off of the Novell server and/or submit enhancement request to Novell Admin for more space on the server. |
000096 09/20/00 | Can't get to any web sites outside of our Intranet. TCP/IP settings are correct and proxy settings are correct. Upgraded IE4.0 w/40bit and SP1 to 128bit and SP2 and still failed. | Don't know what caused this. |
I removed the proxy settings from IE, closed IE, reopened it and reset the proxy settings. It worked. |
000097 | Various printing problems that seem to be related to printer memory or lack thereof. | Default printer drivers often set the DPI setting to 600. Depending on size of the document, amount of graphics, application being printed from, and other factors this can cause the available printer memory to be used up quickly. |
A simple fix can often be setting the DPI down to 300. In the printer properties go to the "Graphics" tab and change the "Resolution" from "600 dots per inch" to "300 dots per inch." |
000098 ~2000 | NT Dell workstation boots all the way to just before the GUI starts, then screen goes black. Power button will not shut off PC unless you hold it in for about 5 seconds. | This happened on a trader's Dell Gx110 PCs with the dual Revolution IV video cards and SGI LCD panels. Determined one of the video cards was defective. I tested with four of the same cards and everytime the one bad card was in the PC as either master or slave, the problem returned. Any combination from the other three cards worked fine. | Replace the card. |
000099 | User attempts to update calendar entries in Lotus Notes and is presented with the message: "Type mismatch on external name..UIEVENTDOCUMENT" | This problem can be caused when the user has exceeded their mail file size limit. | The error message will quite appearing as soon as they get back under their limit. |
000100 | User receives a Lotus Notes email from another user and can not forward or print the message. Able to print and forward other messages with no problem. | Notes provides the ability to restrict the printing and forwarding of messages. If a user selects these options, Notes sets the value of the $KeepPrivate field to "1". This will restrict the recipient from printing or forwarding the document. | The "fix" for this it to discuss with the sender to make sure that the restriction is really required. |
000101 | Lotus Notes mail message header contains a "Sent By:" field AND/OR users cannot reply to your messages. | A user's mail file has an incorrectly specified Mail File Owner field. |
1. Double Click on your Mail File
2. From the action pane: Tools/Preferences & check the 'This mail file belongs to' field 3. If this field is blank, people will not be able to reply to notes that you send 4. If the field does not contain your current Notes address, messages that you send will contain a "Sent by" header 5. To properly set this field, simply click on the down arrow and select your address from the PNC Address Book |
000102 | Users who are using Notes R5 and IE 5.5 are experiencing problems when a web page is accessed within Notes. Multiple windows begin to open within the Notes environment. This only seems to occur when the browser setting in the location profile is set to Notes with Internet Explorer. The worst culprit seems to be the welcome page "Headlines with AOL My News" which never seems to stop opening new windows. | ? | The resolution seems to be to set the browser to plain Internet Explorer. |
000103 | When the "Always show current ToDos on today's calendar" option is used, future ToDo's are being erroneously displayed. | ? | Per input from Lotus, this will probably not be fixed until release 6. |
000104 | After a PC gets converted from Token Ring to Ethernet the user has trouble browsing the Internet. | ? | I created a reg file that will correct this problem. The reg file is called "proxy.reg" and is at: \\mortvh1sms1\install\utils\scripts\. Any questions please let me know. Thanks. Jim Ludwig |
000105 | During the R5 rollout I have been finding a lot of users attempting to use the Lotus Notes spell check and receiving a "cannot add word to user dictionary" error message. | ? | The fix is to rename the user.dic in the C:\notes\data directory. Notes will automatically create a new dictionary the next time you attempt a spell check. (Jim Ludwig) |
000106 | Trying to open a SMAAS mainframe session gives this error: "No Virtual Terminal Available for Session". | Sometimes (don't know how often)some users are already working in SMAAS when other users can't get in and get this error. Find out if more than one user is having the same problem. The one time I'm aware of, this was a problem with SMAAS that needed to be addressed by MTGTECH. | Place a call to the Helpdesk and get a ticket created if there is not one already. Have it sent to the MTGTECH support. |
000107 | User cannot save Word documents to a network drive. The error message says: "Check the drive to make sure the door is closed and it contains the correct disk or CD." | This is a known issue with MS Word 7.0. |
Use our "wrd97nds.reg" file to add the line in the registry to correct this. The registry setting is: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Office\8.0\Word\Options] "DontUseUNC"=dword:00000001 |
000108 | User cannot log into the Novell network in tree mode, but they can in bindery mode. You can log in at that PC with another account ok, but not with this account. This happens on Win95 workstations with the MS Client for Netware (as opposed to the Novell Client32). | This problem is caused when an admin using the Novell Client 3.2 for 95 or 4.7 for NT changes something to the user's account (e.g. password reset). These clients need to have the correct patches on the admins workstation to avoid creating this problem. See Novell's tech info #10025278 | Update the client on the admin PC causing the problem with the available patches. |
000109 | User is not able to reply to messages that have be sent by particular sender. In fact, noone can respond to this same sender. This "sender's" mail also has a "Sent by" field in them. | see MAILFILE.HTM | see MAILFILE.HTM |
000110 | The symptom is that the user is in the sporty system and they attempt to FTP. They are prompted for their password and the hour glass just sits there, no error message and no lockup. | This problem arises when a badly-named, oddly-named or corrupted file exists in the users home directory (i.e. that user's root directory) and they attempt to FTP into their account on that system using the shareware / freeware product QVTNet. | Qvt_ftp.htm |
000111 | When trying to use spell check in Notes, error message comes up: "Cannot add word to dictionary" | User.dic file is corrupt. | Close Notes, rename or remove the C:\Notes\data\user.dic file and re-open Notes. Notes will create a new dictionary file (any words user has added previously will be lost). |
000112 | When tryting to start the Melita application a "Launch Alltel" error box comes up and says: "Please include in the LaunchAlltel section in regedit a Key called 'ExtraVer' with The Window handle ..." | Some registry settings for Melita got messed up/deleted on the PC. |
Currently there is a "Melita.reg" file in \\VH568_SERVER1\VOL1\DATA\GROUPS\LOSS_MIT
\MELITA\UPDATE. Run this reg file. |
000113 | User trying to do something with a custom designed Access database that was giving error: Run-time error '3170': Couldn't find installable ISAM. | Technet suggests the MSexch35.dll (or MSexch40.dll) is not registered in the registry properly. Q161173.txt But in the case I saw, it was registered already and the resolution suggested did not resolve the problem. | I had to reinstall MS Access and then the database worked OK. In other instances I suppose MS' resolution would work. |
000114 | Tried to change settings (e.g. proxy settings) in a user's Notes "location" settings and kept getting the error message "Cannot convert text as number" when trying to save changes. | "Names.nsf" file is corrupt. | Copy entries in the user's personal address book, close Notes, edit out all lines in Notes.ini from "Timezone=" and below, rename the "names.nsf" file in the \Notes\data directory, and reopen Notes. This should be like configuring it for the first time and should create a new "names.nsf" file. |
000115 | A user was trying to print an Excel file to the same LAN printer her co-worker was printing the same file to. It would go to the print que, exit the print que, but then the printer would flash like it was going to print, but never print. The printer had to be turned off and back on before it would print again. | The print driver was a Postscript version on the PC that couldn't print successfully. | Switched to the PCL version of the driver and everything printed fine. |
000116 | After installing the QRM application on the Trader PCs, two of them came up with this error when trying to run the app: [QRM MB System] "OLE IDispatch exception code 0 from ADODB.Connection: ? .. Please call QRM." | ODBC files got blown away somehow or were never installed. The fact that Access was already installed makes me believe they got blown away in the QRM installation somehow. | When Mary called QRM they said to reinstall ODBC. I reinstalled MS Access to get some basic ODBC drivers, etc. and then reinstalled MDAC 2.1. |
000117 | User is getting a "trust relationship" error when trying to login to Mort_vh1. | 3Com driver settings affect this somehow. | See TRUST3COM.TXT in the Reposit. |
000118 | Error: "divide error in module USER.EXE at 0004:000053d9" | Older version of Comctl32.dll in the ...\system or ...\system32 directory. | Replace this file with the correct newer version (maybe compare to similar PC). You may have to do this by booting to DOS prompt before going into the GUI (this can be tricky in NT... maybe use NTFS boot disk?) Microsoft tends to update this file with newer versions of IE. |
000119 | Winipcfg utility on a Win95 PC gives this error: "Fatal Error! Cannot read IP configuration" or pinging to a known available resource returns this error message: "transmit failed, error code 10091". | Winsock files has been removed or replaced with incorrect versions. This may happen in our environment when the 3Com drivers are removed(?). | See Technet article Q191064. Or just boot to Dos, go to C:\Win95\ws2bakup and run the ws2bakup.bat file, reboot and run the C:\Win95\ws2bakup\delw2reg.exe file. |
000120 | When double-clicking on a file in Explorer or an attached file in Notes, a duplicate version of the application opens instead of opening in the same app that is already open. | Registry is messed up. | Use the "/regserver" switch. See Hyacinth's notes. |
000121 | Marge Hensey had a problem where she couldn't launch a .pdf file attachment from Notes. | I'm guessing some registry setting got hosed or some needed files got removed or corrupt. | Reinstall IE5 of 5.5. Apparently this replaces files/registry settings that are needed. |
000122 | Rita Bunten had a problem where she would receive a fatal exception error randomly that showed a problem with voltrack.vxd. | Rita has a Zip Drive attached to her docking station.
000123 | When running the Novell login script with WinNT and the Microsoft Netware Client Service, Nwscript.exe comes up with an error message. | Personal login script has invalid command.
000124 | Using a dialin application like Goldworks/AT&T Global defaults to I.E. instead of Netscape. User is used to using Netscape and vendor prefers Netscape. I.E. keeps opening as the default browser. | Could be when I.E. was upgraded it took over as the default browser. | Use these instructions to reset Netscape as the default browser.
DEFBROWS.HTM |
000125 | Notes error message: "Notes has been asked to execute the following action which does not fit within your security profile: ..." | N/A | See Jim's email from 3/27/01 NOTESECL.HTM |
000126 | Links5 user is trying to open Links5 and getting the error message: "(ATM_SYSTEMERROR) Problem connecting to session. Please call for help." A following message says: "Unable to establish a connection with SMAAS. Please call for support." | The HLLAPI shortname setting is not correct. | Open a relevant session and go to Options/Global Preferences/Advanced. Click on the letter "S" under the "Short name" column and then "Browse" to C:\Program Files\Extra!\Sessions\session2.edp. Click on "Apply" and then on "OK". |
000127 | On an NT workstation with the MS client for Netware user wants to get rid of lan printer banner pages and the print job completed notification. | Just don't know where to go to turn theses off. | See NTBANNER.HTM. Thanks to Chris B. for this. |
000128 | Trying to open MS Access gives a "Disk or network error" and trying to open Winstall with a particular list file gives an error about the list file not being found, then closes without opening winstall. | Virtual memory swap file may be corrupt. | See ACCSSERR.HTM |
000129 | When you right click on a file in Explorer and then choose the "Send To" option and send it to Notepad or Wordpad (or whatever you have in your "Send To" options), it opens a similar, but different file. | Click here | Click here |
000130 | You try to save a file on a Novell server and you keep getting the message: " 'filename.ext' already exists. Do you want to replace it?" even though you can't find that file anywhere in that directory. | Click here | Click here |
000131 | When trying to send wire transfers with the "Wire$tar" application in the Wireroom, the modem dials, connects, tries to authenticate, but then fails. If you dialin with the RAS dialup session (created from Dial-up Networking) it connects and logs in correctly and files can then be transferred from Wire$tar successfully. | The account ID and password are not entered correctly in the right place within the Wire$tar application, but they were entered in the RAS dial-up session. | From within the Wire$tar application go to File/Setup/Remote Access and enter the account ID and password. (I am not sure who has to reset this if the password is forgotten/lost. I suspect the vendor, "Fundtech" or someone in Stockton, CA. Where they are actually dialing in to.) |
000132 | Dell Gx1 was hanging on boot during POST tests when it reached the onboard 3Com NIC. Gave error message and option to F1 for reboot or F2 for Setup. User also reported that system hung just before this. | I'm guessing the onboard NIC is going bad or just got some signal from the switch that confused it momentarily. (Maybe somebody was in the closet and temporarily/unintentionally disconnected her cable?) | Powered down her PC, disconnected LAN cable, booted into BIOS and disabled onboard NIC. Then rebooted successfully into Windows, shutdown PC, reconnected cable, booted into BIOS, reenabled onboard NIC, and rebooted without incident. |
000133 | After moving PCs to a new location and installing HP4si drivers for the LAN printer in that location, 3 users in same row of desks kept having Extra! crash when trying to print. | Don't know exactly. Thought it might be incorrect switch configurations since all were in same row. Apparently something in Extra was corrupt or mixed up after the 4si drivers got installed. Perhaps it was a combination of things that confused Extra! in some way. | The fix was to uninstall Extra! with Winstall, then remove all references to "Attachmate" in the registry, reinstall Extra! with Winstall, and reboot. |
000134 | On my multi-boot test PC (Dell Gxpro) I have two hard drives. First drive has two partitions. 1st partiton is the Win95 partition (FAT16), 2nd is NT (NTFS). The Second hard drive is Redhat. The NT partition was messed up. So I booted to RedHat, used cfdisk to remove the NTFS partition. Fdisk from Win95 could not remove the 2nd (NTFS) partition, because even though it said there was no logical drive on the extended partition, when trying to remove the extended partition it would say "you have to remove the logical partition first." Anyhow, after using cfdisk from RedHat to remove the NTFS partition I used cfdisk to make that partition into FAT16. Then when I rebooted to a Win95 Dos prompt I could see drive D: (the new FAT16 2nd part.) and create a file even. But when I tried to boot into Win95 it said Windows had not been shut down properly, tried to run Scandisk, detected drive D:, gave an "out of memory" error message, then a "Windows can now be shutdown" from a Dos prompt, and stopped there with the option the Ctrl+Alt+Del. I couldn't get past this point. I tried fdisk /mbr and sysing C: from a Win95 boot disk, all to no avail. | Not sure what exactly happend, but suspect the Redhat cfdisk creation of a FAT16 partition on D: was not recognized by Windows 95. | Booted to a Win95 Dos prompt and ran fdisk. I deleted the 2nd partition on the first drive and recreated it. |
000135 | Viewstar user gets an error message like "Selected Volume PD94098A is not online" when trying to print from the Viewstar application. | According to Sandy Jesernig in Louisville, this means the volume is full. I believe that means something on a server in Louisville is full. | User should call 502-581-3978 (as of 6/6/01) and leave the "PD" volume number referred to in the error message. |
000136 | Attachmate Extra! session that is using one of the Lombard gateways is failing to connect with a z598 error code. | The "Resource Name" setting is not correct. I found that this name is case senstive, so that "Lombard2" fails whereas "LOMBARD2" works. | From the open session go to Options/Settings/Connection and edit the "Resource Name" as necessary. I believe the "Resource Name" has to match with the name of the Selected Gateway in the "Advanced" tab. |
000137 | Links5 user is trying to open Links5 and getting the error message: "System error occurred in Registering Client. Please call for Support" A following message says: "Unable to establish connection with SMAAS. Please follow these steps. 1. Exit Application ... 2. If you get this Message again ... 3. If you are still getting ... Call for Support." | The "Path" environment variable needs to be adjusted. | Adjust the environment to add "C:\Program Files\Extra!" to the Path. Watch out for typos. |
000138 | When trying to configure an ODBC "System Data Source" using the "SQL server" driver I got these error messages: "The setup routine for the SQL Server ODBC driver could not be loaded due to system error code 1157." and then "Could not load the setup ot translator library." | "Incorrect registry settings for MDAC components or incorrect .dll files. | See Technet article Q260558. Bottom line, rerun the MDAC upgrade. |
000139 | Two error messages pop up when user
boots their PC.
"A Tuner storage error has occurred: 13204: java.io.IOException: Stale
inode: Inode[null, db=8, inode=813, block=4, length=925]. Please quit
the Tuner and restart it with the fsck option to repair"
|
This is caused when the Castenet Tuner starts up, but I don't know the exact cause. I suspect a process on the server has changed since the Tuner was installed on that particular PC. | Edit the "Castenet" shortcut and add the " -fsck" on the end of the existing target path. Should end up with: "C:\Program Files\WaMu\ Application Manager\Tuner.exe" fsck . (The -fsck should be to the right of the last " with a space between.) Then run the Castenet app with the shortcut and let it finish the repair process. After that is done, go back in and remove the -fsck from the end of the "Target" line. |
000140 | Everytime a client logs in to Novell they get a Dr. Watson error referring to the "Nwscript.exe". | There is something in the login script that causes this. In the case I ran into, there was an EXIT "" in the personal login script. | Remove the offending text from the login script. |
000141 | When opening an Excel 97 file from a network drive in Explorer the user gets a "file could not be accessed" error messsage with several suggestions to resolve. Or they get an error message that the file is already open. As soon as they click on the OK button for either message, the file opens up ok. | I suspect this is due to some corrupt files Excel uses to run or some messed up registry settings. | Reinstall Office 97. |
000142 | The MS Office Toolbar icons are all generic instead of the specific icons they used to be. | Not sure what the cause is. | Right click on each icon and go to properties to reset the icon. Reset each icon just like you would normally set a shortcut icon. |
000143 | User trying to do a mail merge with Word and Excel docs gets: "Word could not get DDE connection to MWExcel to complete the current task." | User does not have necessary rights on network where the Excel file (database source) is located. | Copy or move the Excel (data source) file to a local drive or another location on the network that the user has necessary rights to (e.g. The user's personal network drive). |
000144 | On a Windows 95 workstation, it fails to pick up an IP address from the DHCP server. Even after editing the TCP/IP settings correctly, Winipcfg fails to allow you to release and renew the IP address. The buttons are grayed-out for releaseing and renewing. | Unknown | Open the registry with Regedit and delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\DHCP\DhcpInfoxx key (where "xx" is a digit or digits). You might want to export this key first! |
000145 | The Screen Fonts HOST ("Personal Communications" emulator) have changed and do not all fit in the screen as needed. | Don't know why this seems to happen by itself sometimes. I wonder if Windows hangs while HOST is open if the configuration file gets hosed and then rebuilt to a default state when opened again. | Open HOST. Undo the maximized window if necessary. Click on Appearance/Font and check the "Fixed Size" circle. Choose the IBM3270 4x8 setting then click OK and close the HOST application. Reopen HOST, go back into the font settings and choose "Automatic sizing" then OK. |
000146 | PC runs out of resources and may have video problems (e.g. WAMU Desktop logo is different size and location). This seems to happen especially while the Host application is running (this may be coincidental since almost everybody here uses Host). | Netscape was not installed properly or has not been updated as needed. | Use Marimba to update Netscape. |
000147 | MS Office toolbar icons all turned into generic icons. | Unknown (May happen when PC runs out of resources and affects the video.) | 1. Right click on the left end of the toolbar and choose "Customize." 2. Uncheck the "Auto fit into Title Bar Area" and click OK. 3. Right click anywhere within the gray empty space on the toolbar and click on "Refresh Icons". 4. Right click again, choose "Customize", check "Auto fit into Title Bar Area", and click OK. |
000148 | Printing from Host uses a font that squishes letters together or user just doesn't like the font Host prints. | The Host application print font is not what user wants. | Click on File/Page Setup and pick the font the user wants. "Courier New" seems to be a good default font for printing. |
000149 | Melita user tries to open Melita application, which opens an Attachmate Extra! session. Then the user types "tpx" in the Extra! session and gets an error message like: "PIJ19 Application inactive or bind failed. Sense code 08210016" | The "text display options" were set incorrectly. The only one of five options that worked was "5 - 27 x 132" option. | Open the Extra! session and go to: Options/Settings/Display/Text Display Options/Model and pick "5 - 27 x 132", then click on the "Apply" button. |
000150 | A user experiences an error..."Unable to find ordinal 183 in Mapi32.dll" (or words to that effect), | ID10T | The fix is documented in the handout they were given when they were set up on Sieble. In Netscape , Preferences, Mail and newsgroups, the selection "use netscape messenger from MAPI based applications" MUST BE DESELECTED. Also, obviously, Netscape must be installed and at latest level. See Ordinal138.txt |
000151 | After installing Crystal Reports 6.0 the WinCmss application fails with an error message referring to the "CRPE32.DLL" file. | The Crystal Reports install did something to confuse WinCmss' previous settings. | Uninstall WinCmss and reinstall it. |
000152 | In Alltel Director user is getting: "exception thrown when trying to register container object" | Corrupt files. | Alltel Support directed user to delete files from C:\Windows\temp and find and delete "maxdir.exe" and "maxdir.ini" files on C:. |
000153 | Client is trying to use the "ALPS" ("ACS") application and getting an error message "object variable width ...". | User's account may not have admin rights on NT workstation. | Add user's account to Admin group on local NT workstation. |
000154 | An Excel file that is shared by multiple users on the network gives a Dr. Watson error when anyone tries to open it and it fails to open. | Suspect someone with newer version of Excel is opening it, editing it, and saving it in the newer format. | Open the file with the newer version and resave it in the older format. |
000155 | Melita user tries to open Melita application and the Extra! session opens like it should, but the Melita interface doesn't. | This happens when the user's Novell account is not a member of the necessary Netware group for Melita (not sure of the specific group name). This happened several times when an employee from another department tries to use Melita, because their Netware account has never been adjusted. | Have the client contact Data Security to have their Netware account added to the needed group. |
000156 | Profile manager in Netscape does not show any profiles and will not allow you to create a new profile. | NSREG.DAT file is corrupt. | Delete NSREG.DAT file from the operating system's directory (Windows, WINNT), and start the profile manager. It will create a new NSREG.DAT file. |
000157 | The "Query" function under the "Search" menu item is grayed out and therefore unavailable in the Online Manual (greader) application. | This happens on Windows NT, 2000, and XP workstations. The application was only designed to run on Windows 95 and the manufacturer of the product is out of business. There is no longer any support for this application. The rumor is that WAMU is working on a web-based replacement for this. | There is no solution short of replacing the PC/Image with a Win95 based image. |
000158 | Printing from Host uses a font that squishes letters together or user just doesn't like the font Host prints. | The Host application print font is not what user wants. | Click on File/Page Setup and pick the font the user wants. "Courier New" seems to be a good default font for printing. |
000159 | Windows 95 PC hangs on bootup just at the end of the NAV scan. This is within DOS before the Win95 GUI interface even starts. A cold reboot seemed to resolve the problem until the next day. | Chris Behymer ran into a ticket with this symptom. The Autoexec.bat file has a line after the NAV line like this: "Echo Y | del c:\Temp\~*.tmp". On this particular user's PC there were hundreds and hundreds of "*.tmp" files. As you can see, the line in the Autoexec.bat only deletes "*.tmp" files that start with a "~". Chris concluded this problem happens when there are too many "*.tmp" files. Could it be that after a days work there are so many "*.tmp" files that DOS ran out of memory or file handles the next time it tried to operate the command? Then on a reboot some of those "~*.tmp" files have been deleted so DOS doesn't choke again until more "~*.tmp" files are created during use of the PC. | Chris removed the "~" from the line in the Autoexec.bat so that all of the "*.tmp" files were deleted and the problem disappeared. |
000160 | All of the Alltel Online Letter Writer printers are failing to print. | Front End Controller or Router problems. | See ALLTELPRINT.HTM |
000161 | Error when you log in to the host application within Director or mainframe host keeps disconnecting. | Application like "Amortize It" has been installed and replaced *.dll files with different versions. These other versions stop Alltel Director from working properly. | Check the Altldirct.txt document and/or identify and replace incorrect *.dll files, or reimage. (If it is clear that unauthorized software has been installed on PC, a JPR will be required.) |
000162 | Links5 users is getting error message that the path cannot be found when they click on their "Links5" shortcut. Multiple users had same symptom after being able to use this a day or two before. Links server in Downers Grove could be pinged, though Links launcher could not find the server/location. | All of these users had static IP addresses. We are guessing the static IP addresses were removed from the routing tables, routers, or switches over the weekend. | In this case, since these users no longer needed the static IPs, we could remove and enable DHCP. If users would need to keep their static IP address for some reason, I suspect the routers/switches would need to be checked by appropriate support personnel (currently AT&T). |
000164 | User is getting a "1722" error message when they try to run Rightfax. They have not used Rightfax before. | User does not have an account on the Domain (or the correct domain?) or possible not a member of the necessary group on the domain. (We have not been given details at this time.) The complete error message actually says this if the user reads it completely. | Try to determine if user has an account on correct domain and/or instruct user to follow procedures for acquiring/configuring account as needed. |
000165 | An NT workstation user is not getting their network drives when logging into the network. Their password has just been reset recently by one of the support groups. Novell admin utilities show that the user is logging in successfully. You may be able to map the drives manually through Windows Explorer. The user can log in to another workstation and get all their Novell mapped drives. Novell system login script is not running or not running properly. You can log in with another account at this workstation without any of these symptoms. | The Novell "Setpass" utility has been used to change the user's Novell account and now the account is corrupted. Another possibility is that particular administrative ulilities are being used from a support rep's PC that are corrupting the user's account. Certain combinations of Netware clients, admin utilities, and Novell configurations have been known to corrupt client's accounts. | Try this:
1. change the CSNW settings for bindery mode login with Wmchip01 as primary server 2. log client out and back in 3. reset CSNW back to NDS mode with correct tree and context settings 4. log client out and back in again. If this fails to resolve, the only solution we have seen is to have the user's Netware account removed and recreated. |
000166 | End user is getting an "unexpected login failure" when trying to log on to the network. | In this particular case the user's PC locked up and she rebooted without logging out of the network. When trying to log back in she either forgot her new password until it was too late and Novell locked her account or she kept trying to login before Novell freed up her account again (since she had not logged out properly Novell thought she was still logged in) and the system locked her out. This is a feature of Novell designed to protect from hackers trying to guess a person's password. | Support staff or Novell admin has to unlock user's account unless they are willing to wait the time period (24 hrs?) for account to unlock. We do not currently have information on default time settings like these. |
000167 | End user is getting an "unexpected login failure" when trying to log on to the network. | This error message may be displayed on some systems (with particular Netware clients) whenthe user did not log out properly, so Novell thinks they are still logged in. If "concurrent logins" are set to only 1, Novell will not allow a second login. The particular Netware client may give this generic error message instead of the more specific error message referring to "concurrent logins." | Support staff or Novell admin may need disconnect the current logged in account or else bump up the concurrent logins by 1. |
000168 | When printing to an HP 5si lan printer the user's print outs are lighter than they should be. It doesn't matter what application they print from. The print is too light. Other users can print to the same printer and their print is nice and dark like it is suppose to be. | Read this document: 5si_liteprint.htm | Read this document: 5si_liteprint.htm |
000169 | When the user logs in on a Windows NT workstation (maybe XP too?) the MS Networking login script generates an error like this:
\\mortvh1bdc2\netlogon\avsigupdate.vbs Line 19 Char 5 Error File not found Code 800a0035 Source MS VBScript Runtime Error |
See VBScriptError.htm | See VBScriptError.htm |
000170 | User is trying to print from the Rekon application and it prints the first page, but either fails to print the duplicate copy or takes a very long time to print the duplicate copy. | The CSNW (Netware) settings on the PC are set to notify print jobs to the user. This stops Rekon from printing the second copy (probably until the nortification is cleared). | Clear the check mark in CSNW from the "Notify when printed". |
000171 | Windows NT workstation is running extremely slow. | Driver for IDE interface is incorrect and page file size is too small. | See slowNTimages.htm |
000172 | Client opens Netscape and gets an error message: "The system detected an Unresolved Host Name while attempting to resolve the host specified in the requested URL." See this link for a more complete description of the error message: ns_unresolved.htm | The default home page for Netscape is set to a non-existing web site (URL). | Type in the correct home page address in the "Location:" box and then edit Netscape preferences to point to this page as the home page. |
000173 | When user prints several jobs, the printer only prints to or three before pausing for a long period in between the next couple of jobs. | The CNSW client for Netware has the "notify when printed" option checked. When more than two or three jobs are sent to the printer in quick succession, the "notification" messages hang up the print jobs until the notifications are cleared. Then two or three more jobs print and those notifications hang the following jobs until cleared. And so on, and so on, and so on ... | Uncheck the "Notify when printed" box in CSNW and log out and back in. |
000174 | Windows NT workstation is exhibiting slow performance. | Chris Behymer found that the NT images (5000 and 1000 series) do not have the correct IDE drivers for the Intel Ultra ATA IDE interface/controller. | Here are Chris' instructions for resolving this and another tweak to help the performance of NT. SlowNTPCs.htm |
000175 | User cannot log in to the Oracle database. | The "Oracle Client" service startup is set to "Manual" not "Automatic" and/or the "tnsnames.ora" file is not where it belongs. | Check this document for how to resolve this issue. Oracle_on_5166.htm Thanks to Chris B. for this. |
000176 | The Host application ("Personal Communications") will not open, but gives an error message of: "Connectivity error, please call SPOC". | Typically this means the PC is not getting a working IP address for some reason. It could be the TCP/IP settings are configured incorrectly, the network cable is not connected, the subnet it is on has run out of available IP addresses, etc. | First of all, see if the PC has a legitimate IP address. Ping or tracert to or from the PC. If not, figure out why not and make the correction. If it does have an IP address, is it a static IP recently put there for some other application? If TCP/IP is configured and working correctly, you might want to try copying the C:\Program Files\Personal Communications\Private\Host.ws file from a known working PC to the broken one and see if this fixes it. The Host.ws file is the configuration file for the Host application. |
000177 | Windows XP (or 2000) PC is running real slow. (Don't you love real specific symptoms like this :-)? ) | One possiblility is that "indexing" is turned on one of the local drives. | Right click on the drive in question (e.g. C:) from Explorer, and uncheck the "Allow Indexing ..." box. Click the apply button. This will probably take a few minutes. In the process you may get a message about not being able to apply this to some files. Select the button to ignore all these files. |
000178 | "Betrieve error: File: w:\wpos\products\wpospric.db
Operation: 0 Status: 35" |
Client is not logged in to the network properly, does not have drive mappings, or does not have necessary rights on network. If this is happening to multiple users there may be a problem with the server or network involved. | Help client get logged in and drive mappings properly or point them to facilities for gaining proper access. If multiple users are experiencing the same problem you may need to forward the issue to the Server admins or Network Services group. |
000179 | In Rekon application, the bar code doesn't print and/or Rekon docs don't print correctly, and/or there are missing letters on documents. | Necessary fonts for rekon have not been installed. | See rekonfonts.htm |
000180 | Windows NT user opening Word got an error message similar to: "The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction". | It may be that the "Command.com" file is corrupt or replaced with an incorrect version. According to MS Knowledge Base Article 245184: "This behavior can occur if you use an incorrect version of the Command.com file. For example, this issue is known to occur if you use a Command.com file included in Microsoft Windows 95, dated 7/11/95." | According to MS Knowledge Base Article 245184: "To resolve this issue, replace the Command.com file in the Winnt\System32 folder with the same file from another computer that is running Windows NT Workstation 4.0 or Windows NT Server 4.0, and then make sure that there are no Command.com files dated 7/11/95 on the computer. You can also replace the Command.com file on the computer with the same file on the Windows NT installation CD-ROM." |
000181 | Alltel Online Letter Writer printer is not printing. The LED display on the printer says "Ready" and the link light on the NIC is green, but nothing is printing. The other Online Letter Writer printers are printing ok. | See OnlineLetterWriter.htm and online_letter_writer_fix.htm.
These documents are tickets for the same problem that started at the
CSC helpdesk with Alltel (Fidelity), was sent to IGS and eventually to
us, round and round, back and forth, until CSC and Alltel (Fidleity)
were finally brought back into the issue and resolved like they should
have to begin with. In this case (and I believe this is typical from
the end user's comment at the beginning of one of the tickets) there was
a print job stuck in Alltel's (Powercell?/Fidelity?) print queue.
Until the right person at the CSC helpdesk and Alltel
(Powercell?/Fidelity?) got involved, they kept pushing it back to IBM,
who couldn't do anything about it.
It may also be that the printer just needs to be turned off and on again to recycle it's connection. Possibly the front end controller needs to be rebooted and then the printer rebooted. |
Send the ticket and/or client back to the CSC Helpdesk (currently through Qmboulder -> CTSC) and Alltel/Fidelity. If it helps, call Debbie Caldwell (CSC manager) at x4605 or Theresa Jones (CSC) at x2314. I have worked with Theresa several times on these issues. |
000182 | A user (User A) gets a forwarded email
from another user (User B), but the email has links in User B's Netscape
that he/she can click on, while the email on User A's PC does not
display the email correctly with the links. It has a link with a
generic document icon and a message like: "Type: Outlook Express Mail Message (message/rfc822) Encoding: 7bit". Clicking on this link does not help. |
Netscape profile on User A's PC is corrupt. | Create a new Netscape profile for User A. |
000183 | Trying to save a Word document (File/Save As) does not function correctly. | The default Word template file (Normal.dot) may be corrupt. | Close Word, delete the Normal.dot file (typically in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\templates), and reopen Word (Word will create a new default template). |
000184 | Reopening Excel documents gave error msg that file is already in use and would only open as read-only. | "Excel.exe" was already running 4 other instances in Task Mgr Processes, one or more of which had the particular spreadsheet(s) open still. This situation was precipitated by a known corrupt spreadsheet from earlier. In order to recreate a new version of the corrupt file she had to open the corrupt one to print it out, then she could retype the data into a new, fresh spreadsheet from the printed copy. But when closing the corrupt file, she got Dr. Watson errors and Excel never close properly all the way from memory even though it looked like it was closed. This eventually led to multiple copies of "Excel.exe" being open in memory ("processes" in Task Manager), which led to the "already in use" error. | Closed extra "Excel.exe" instances from Task Manager and all was fine. Showed client how to create an Excel template file to use instead of copying from old file to new, from that file to another, from that file to another, and on and on. This will help avoid these kinds of problems in the future. |
000185 | Opening the Rekon application gives a "Divide by Zero ..." error. Then when you click on the "OK" button to clear the error message you get a BSOD memory dump. | The Rekon shortcut is pointing to the incorrect executable. In this case it was pointing to M:\Rekon95\Recon.exe instead of M:\Rekon95\Recon95.exe This particular instance was a WinNT PC. I'm not sure if Win95 PCs use the same executable as the WinNT PCs. PDW 4/25/03 | Correct the shortcut path\filename. |
000186 | Netscape email (Communicator) keeps crashing and client looses emails he/she was working on. | I had a user who was experiencing this. Her local C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\user_profile directory was about 2.5Gigs in size. (YES GIGS!) 'Nough said. | You can create a separate new profile AND DON'T TRANSFER THE OLD ...\Users\user_profile folder (IT"S TOO DOGGONE BIG!). If the user wants to access their old mail have them try while not logged in and with as little else running as possible. Make sure there is plenty of hard drive space and have them clean it up as much as possible. |
000187 | LAN infoprint 1140: repeatedly jams. | Drawers were installed in the wrong order ( 2,1,3 ) | Installed drawers in correct order ( 1,2,3) Ran test pages with no problems. |
000188 ~04//01/03 |
Novell network (browsing or printing) is very slow for everyone or a large group of people in the same general area. | Novell lan printer (or other device) is configured for 802.3 frame type instead of 802.2 (or auto detect). If someone deploys a new printer and doesn't know how to configure it correctly or if a service technician replaces parts and doesn't reconfigure it correctly, this may cause the problem. | Reconfigure printer for 802.3 (not sure if there is a setting for auto-detect). |
000189 | The keyboard seems to be failing on an XP workstation. The strange thing is that it works when logging in, but then fails once the user gets past the login box. | "Filterkeys" Accessiblity option is enabled. This can be configured by holding down the right "Shift" key for eight or more seconds. So it could be done accidently if something is sitting on the right shift key and then the user presses ENTER. (Try it for fun :-) ) | Double-click on the "Filterkeys" icon in the taskbar, disable the "Filterkeys" section in the "Keyboard" tab of the "Accessiblitiy Options", and click on the "Apply" button. |
000190 11/29/07 |
When trying to install an application in Windows 98se I get a message about the "INSTMSIA.EXE" file is missing. | Not sure why this is. I suspect when all the Windows 98se updates are applied, this file is replaced/removed. Then older application installations that expect it to be there cannot be installed. (Just my theory) | I found a copy of this file on the Internet and downloaded it. Also found a couple of local copies with some older Windows 98 drivers. |
000191 11/29/07 |
While trying to install the sound drivers on an old HP Pavilion 8662c PC I could not find the right drivers. The only thing HP had on their site was an update to the modem/sound combo card. It kept failing to work after a fresh Windows 98 install because the original drivers were not installed yet. Duh. | Lack of info. | The card is actually a Conexant Riptide modem/sound card. I downloaded drivers from driverguide.com and got them installed. Then I ran the update from HP's site. |
00199 5/30/03 | NT workstation crashes with a BSOD (blue screen of death) that refers to the NAVeng.sys. The screen says that it is performing a memory dump and lists a whole bunch of files, several of which are related to Norton Anti-Virus (NAV). | We saw this happen on a bunch of NT workstations when the DAT files (5/27/03) had just been updated on the server and it began pushing them down to the NT workstations. Since Symantec had been warning for some time previously that they were no longer supporting NAV 5.0, and all the company images were using NAV 5.0, this latest DAT file update was apparently not compatible with NAV 5.0 and was trying to read/access some portion of memory that it couldn't/shouldn't. | The quick work-around was to open the NT workstation in VGA mode (this seemed to give us more time before blue screening), uninstall NAV via Control Panel/Add Remove Programs, and reboot. The longer term fix was to edit the server's login script in combination with replacing the 5/27/03 DAT files with the older 5/21/03 DAT files and reinstall NAV 5.0 on the workstations. |
00200 6/10/03 |
User was getting an error message when opening an Access database that "User2143" had the database locked. "User2143" is an MS Networking machine name. So how can you determine who is using that workstation? | Difficult to determine what network account is using what workstation. | Use the "Net Send" command line utility to send a message to that workstation. E.g. At a DOS prompt, type: net send User2143 Please call me at 123-456-7890 asap! This should pop up a message of "Please call me at 123-456-7890 asap!" on the "User2143" workstation. Hopefully they will respond. Unfortunately some users get scared by popup messages like this. |
00201 6/10/03 |
User logged in to his workstation and the network ok, but then he cannot open any applications. He can click on Start/Programs and see the list of folders, but everytime he tries to click on an application shortcut it fails to open. There is no error message. I logged him out and logged in as myself and had the same results. I could do a Start/Run and type CMD to get a DOS prompt open though. | The escape key on his keyboard was stuck in the down position. | Replace the keyboard if the key continues to get stuck. |
00202 06/12/03 |
Computer is giving a "No Operating System Found" message on bootup. | It could be there is a flopy disk in drive A: that is not a bootable disk. We have also seen some (IBM) PCs that will give this message if the mouse or keyboard is not plugged in correctly. | Remove the floppy disk from A: or plug the keyboard and/or mouse in correctly. |
00203 7/2/03 |
Printing legal size Excel file causes an error to display on printer asking to change tray1 to legal size. This is on a Windows XP workstation. | Suspect "Lexmark Optra T610 (MS)" printer driver is buggy. Don't know if this applies to other models or the equivalent IBM Infoprint printers. (Certain Lexmark and IBM Infoprint printers are really the same printers with some minor differences.) | Replace the current drivers with the PCL drivers for the same printer. |
00204 7/3/03 |
When trying to install an Infoprint Color 1228 LAN printer via a TCP/IP port, I kept getting this error message just as the driver files finished being copied: "Printer driver setup error. Operation could not be completed." | There was already an HP Photosmart P1000 local printer already installed on this PC. Along with this was an HP utility running in memory with an icon in the lower right-hand taskbar. This apparently caused some sort of conflict. | Right click on the HP utility and then choose to close it. Now install the other drivers. |
00205 | Double clicking on an *.html or *.htm document in Windows Explorer does not open up the file in Netscape like it should. If Netscape was already open, it brings Netscape to the fore, but not with the file you were trying to open. If Netscape was not open yet, an error message opens that says something like: "Cannot find the file 'path and name of the file you are trying to open' (or one of its components). Make sure the path ... libraries are available." Then Netscape opens in the background with the file you were trying to open. The file associations settings seem to be ok and the icon with the file in Explorer is correct for the file association. | File associations' advanced settings may be incorrect. | Depending on your version of Windows, Go to View/Options/File Types or Tools/Folder Options/File Types and select the filetype you are working with (in this case "htm" or "html"). Again depending on your version of Windows, go to "Edit" or "Advanced" and edit the "Open" Action type. Uncheck the "Use DDE" box and then click OK and close out the dialog boxes. This seemed to correct this problem on my NT workstation, even though my 2000 workstation worked fine with this setting as it was. |
00206 PDW 08/29/03 |
Screen saver on NT workstation fails to come on after set time. | User's local profile is corrupt. | Log in with local admin account to workstation. Remove the user's local profile directory from C:\Winnt\profiles, then reboot and let user log back in. This creates a new local profile for the user and the screensaver should now work. |
00207 09/10/03 |
Multiple users suddenly cannot print to a network printer from their XP workstations. | The printer configuration on the workstations are using the IP address of the printer and for one reason or another, that IP address has changed. It could be the printer is configured to get it's IP via DHCP, which is almost guaranteed to change every once in a while. If the printer was moved from one subnet to a different one, the IP would change. There are a variety of other reasons why the IP would change. | A better way to configure the printer on workstations is to use the printer's hostname instead of IP address. That way, even when the IP address would change, the hostname should stay the same and the computers would be unaffected. To find the hostname of the printer you may need to get into the printer's configuration settings or print out a configuration page of the printer. Different printers have different ways to do this. Check the owner's manual if necessary. |

Certain web pages give this error message: "Object not found!
The requested URL was not found on this server. If you entered the URL manually please check your spelling and try again. If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster Error 404 . . . " You can open the web page directly from Explorer, but not from another page with a link to these pages. |
The particular web page and browser/browser version are not compatible. The web pages
I discovered this on had code in the pages that confused Netscape 4.78, yet worked fine in I.E. 5.5. These particular
pages were copied from somewhere else on the Internet. The code that seemed to be creating the problem was:
link rel=stylesheet type="text/css" href="/style.css" (inside the arrow brackets <>) |
Try a different browser. If you can edit the web page, remove the code causing the problem. |

User gets an error message when opening Outlook. It won't open normally, but gives the option to open in safe mode. User can open in safe mode but it does not work properly. | On XP workstations that are configured to open Outlook automatically, if a user tries to use it during this time, it may fail. | Have the user restart their PC (not sure if logging out and back in is enough), but instruct them NOT to try to use Outlook when it pops up during the login process. |

User reports getting a "Dr Watson error" message when attempting to open a particular Web application (in this case, an Intranet page) User followed instructions to download application off the Internet which is supposed to allow access to this Intranet web application/page. Problem still persists. | The particular Intranet Webpage/application is not designed for user's browser and/or browser configuration. | User might try using a different browser (Netscape, IE, Mozilla, Firefox). Otherwise user would need to contact people who support that particular webpage. |
000211 10/09/03 (This was on a Novell Netware 4.x network) |
User cannot log in to Novell because all of his/her concurrent connections are used up. They get a message stating same when trying to login. User claims they are not logged in to too many workstations and that they have been logging out appropriately. You can see multiple connections on the same workstation with different dates/times when you use the "Nlist user= u123456 /a/b" command. (See concurrent.txt) | Seems to be some bug in Windows NT/Netware client combination that does not release the Novell connection unless the PC is restarted or powered down. Merely logging off and back on does not release the Novell connection. | Power down any PCs the user is logged into. Wait a few seconds and power back up. |

Client's MS mapped drives fail to remap when user logs out and back in or reboots. Also, not all the NT domains show up in Network Neighborhood like they should. You can get to unseen NT shares, but the domains/servers just don't show up in Windows Explorer/My computer until after you have opened one manually, so to speak (e.g. Go to DOS prompt and type "start \\servername"). | User's local profile is corrupt. | Rename or move the user's local profile directory from C:\Documents and Settings. Reboot and have the user log back in. Expect it to take longer when user logs in since profile stuff has to be downloaded from the server to the local PC. Also prepare the user for opening all apps for the "first" time again with new profile. |

Users have lost their Novell drive mappings. CSNW (MS Client Services for Netware) settings seem to be ok. Even after changing CSNW settings and rebooting, drives are still gone. Removing and reinstalling CSNW resolves the problem. | This happened once when a patch for a custom application was deployed to large group of PCs. The package that was deployed messed up a Registry setting. | Uninstall CSNW, reboot, and reinstall. If you are qualified to work with the Windows registry you can look at this information, but WE ABSOLUTELY MAKE NO GUARANTEES! (see CSNW_missing_drives.htm) |

(Technet article Q326903) When Client Services for NetWare (CSNW) opens Microsoft Office files, delays may occur. The problem typically occurs when you are opening files on NetWare-based servers. | This problem occurs because CSNW continually resolves printer names, server names, and object properties. This causes poor performance. The problem becomes more pronounced as more clients perform the queries. | To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. (SP1 resolved this issue, but the latest service pack at this time [3/19/05] is SP2.) |

User gets this error message every few minutes: "The system has detected an IP address conflict with another system on the network. ..." | It may be due to a bug in some DHCP admin utility software used to administer the DHCP server/scopes. Either way, the procedure mentioned is the current way to handle this issue. | Contact the person(s) responsible for maintaining the DHCP configuration on the network and explain this issue to them. Two of my three PCs suddenly lost network connectivity for seemingly no reason. The third was fine. I couldn't ping anything including the Gateway address on my subnet. Rebooting did not help. Even powering off both PCs did not help. | Not sure why or what caused it, but my Linksys hub got confused or "stuck" even though the lights didn't indicate any problem. The third PC was directly plugged into a separate data port under my desk, rather than the hub. | I powered off both PCs and then disconnected the hub from the power cable and the network cable to the data port under my desk (not sure if I needed to disconnect the data cable or not). Then I plugged everything back in and powered up and connected to the network without problem. I have seen this same thing happen occassionally on my hub at home (different brand). |

THIS ONE IS PERSONAL! I hate they default "Detail" view of files and folders in XP's Explorer (My Computer). It displays them in "groups". So if you want to see all the files in chronological order according to their "Date Modified" you almost have to go to a command prompt. | I suspect this is because some XP developers at Microsoft were trying to justify their existence. Linux developers would never do anything this stupid (In my humble opinion.) | The way I found to correct this is to right click anywhere in the white space of the right-hand pane, then click on "Arrange Icons By" and uncheck the "Show in Groups" option. (screen print) |
000229 Paul W. 2/6/04 |
Similar to the item above, the default columns in XP's Explorer (at least on my PC) include the "Date Created" field, but not the "Date Modified". I prefer to see the dates that files were last changed more than the dates they were created. | As is often evidenced, Microsoft developers DO NOT live in the real world and even if they did they wouldn't think to find out how most people actually use their PCs. (They have the "works for me" mentality.) | Right click on the column headers in Explorer and choose the column(s) you want to display in Explorer. |

When you start Microsoft Outlook or try to open a personal folders (.pst) file or an offline folders (.ost) file, you may receive the following error message: Errors have been detected in the file |
This problem occurs because the .pst and the .ost files have a 2 gigabyte (GB) size limitation, and the error message occurs when it is exceeded. The Inbox Repair Tool cannot correct this problem. | To resolve this problem, find the
"pst2b.exe" utility (if you cannot find a copy on your PC, you may need
to download it from Microsoft).
NOTE:Read the instructions carefully in the Readme file that comes with this utility. Recovery Limitations of the 2 GB Truncation Utility: 2. The utility truncates the .pst file to under 2 GB. To have enough working space, truncate the file between 20 to 25 megabytes (MB) less than the 2 GB limit. The truncated data is removed from the new copy, which means some messages are missing from the recovered copy. You can use this process to attempt to recover the data, but it is not 100 percent successful. If this tool does work, it does not recover all of the data (the truncated data is missing). |

User had DSL connection with a Linksys Wireless Router. Computer was connected to the router and was always connected to the Internet as desired. It was configured originally without using SBCYahoo's software. Users were gone over a weekend (but were allowing other family members to use their system) and when they came back they could not connect to the Internet. They called SBC helpdesk and SBC had them disconnect from router and connect PC directly to the DSL modem. SBC also helped them create a new Network connection to login to the Internet everytime they rebooted the PC. User desired to configure their system so they could use the router and be connected without having to login everytime. | Router configuration apparently changed or got reset. | 1. Connected PC to router directly (if not already). Make sure both router and PC are powered up. (may need to reboot PC).
2. Confirm that PC gets IP address from the router. 3. Open browser and point URL to router address of 192.168.1.1 ("ipconfig /all" should show router address if not 192.168.1.1). 4. Login to router (in this case the username was left blank and the password was "xxxxx"). 5. Set hostname to user's email address previous to the @ sign (e.g. goober@sbcglobal.net - hostname="goober") 6. Set domain name to "sbcglobal.net". 7. Set connection type (don't remember exact term, but this option was on the same page-main config page). 8. Set username to user's email address (e.g. goober@sbcglobal.net) 9. Set user's password to their password. 10. Apply the settings to the router. 11. Power down PC. 12. Reconnect router to DSL modem if necessary. It may also be good to reset whole system. a. power down DSL modem and disconnect phone cable, power down router, and PC b. wait 60 seconds and reconnect phone cable to DSL modem c. power up DSL modem and wait a few minutes while it recycles and connects (power light should be on, DSL light should come on, and possibly others per instrucs) d. When DSL modem is fully up and set, power up router and wait a minute while it connects (you should see activity light on DSL modem flicker as router connects and chats a little) e. When router is all ready, power up PC. |

When trying to save changes to a .gif file in MSpaint it forces me to do a "Save as" instead of just "Save". I can pick the original file and choose to overwrite it, thereby accomplishing my update, but it is a waste of time and an irritation. I should just be able to do a Ctrl + S and have it save the update. | At first I thought this was a problem with some Windows dll files or possibly a registery setting. It turned out that it was specific to particular .gif files. I got these particular .gif files from a Mapquest search I did. I don't remember whether I saved them from my Linux box or my Windows box. If I get more time I'll research/test this. | The fix is to either live with it or open the .gif file in Paint, then save it in a different format (.bmp or .jpg). I did this and it seemed to work ok. The problem is that when I tried to save the newly created .jpg or .bmp to a new .gif file, I lost some of the color. (more research to come) |

See this: XP_inplace_upgrade.txt From the way I understand it, the wpa.dbl file is hardware specific. So if you copy it from a different PC than the one you are using, it may or may not work, or it may work for thirty days or so and than give the error message again. By the way, I believe if you can't get the wpa.dbl file back onto your hard drive where it belongs (because you can't even get to a DOS prompt, you may want to try a Linux boot disk or CD with NTFS capabilities [e.g. "SystemRescue CD"].) I had my AMD 900 system configured for dual-boot with Windows 2k and Redhat Linux 8.0. Every time I tried to ftp from this computer or to this computer, while booted to Linux, the system would either shut down totally or reboot. (One time it shut down so hard, I had to turn off the power center it was plugged into before it would even turn back on.) It actually got a few files transferred first usually, so it might have been after a certain amount of bytes transferred (I didn't test that thoroughly). But when I was booted into Windows I could ftp files back and forth with no problem. (I didn't have any kind of ftp server in Windows so I couldn't ftp into it from another PC like I could when Linux was running on it with it's ftp server.) In order to determine if the problem was specific to Linux running on the PC, I tested with a Knoppix live CD and had the same results when ftp-ing. | I don't know for sure, but have concluded from my testing that there must have been an IRQ conflict between the Dlink network card and the ACPI function of the bios/motherboard that Windows could handle, but Linux couldn't. When I checked in Windows2k for hardware conflicts/sharing (Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information/Hardware Resources/Conflicts/Sharing) I noticed IRQ 11 was being used by both the network card and MS ACPI-Compliant System (as well as a few other items). I was already wondering if it might have something to do with the power-saving features of the motherboard/bios and this strenthened that theory. | My resolution (though really more of a work-around) was to go into the bios setup and disable the ACPI feature. I did this and tested with RedHat 8.0 and the Knoppix CD and could not recreate the problem. I went back in to the bios and re-enabled the ACPI feature and the problem returned. So for now, I am leaving the ACPI feature disabled in the bios (especially since I never really used it anyhow on this PC). |

I want the command prompt to have an "autocomplete" feature like Linux typically does. That is, when I type a command that uses a filename (e.g. - dir autoexec.bat) I would like to be able to type the first few characters of the filename, then press the tab key to complete the filename. (e.g. - "dir auto" Tabkey - completes the command to "dir autoexec.bat") | This feature is built in to Windows NT, 2000, and XP. Not sure why, but MS disables it by default. | You can enable filename completion in the NT, W2k, or XP command shell by using regedit and editing HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor and changing the CompletionChar value from "0" to "9" (0x00000000 to 0x00000009). |

Everytime the user opened Internet Explorer he would get a login box asking for his domain account and password. If he went to any other Internet sites it would do the same thing. When he tried to login it failed and before too long his domain account was locked out. He ended up locking his account out several times a day. | There were really two problems in this case. The first problem was
that there was a network
drive mapped on his system that was originally mapped using someone
else's network account even while logged in as initial user.
So everytime this user logged in he would get a message that not all his
network drives were available. Then when opening IE the
proxy didn't know which account to use, thereby presenting the login
box.
The second problem was that the user didn't know to add the "AD_Domain/" before his account name when trying to login to the proxy, thereby making repeated failed attempts, resulting in his account being locked out. |
To resolve the problem, I right clicked on the extra drive mapping and chose "disconnect" from the drop-down list. Educating the user on how to login properly would allow the user to login to the proxy if needed in the future. |
000247 01/12/06 |
This problem is similar to the problem above, but a little bit different. This user's domain account was getting locked out several times a day for no apparent reason. he didn't mention any trouble getting to Internet sites like the user above, but it may have been because he didn't need to. | I don't know for sure what caused this, but am guessing he had logged in to the network on one of his lab machines that didn't have a standard company configuration. Then when someone else tried to login to that same machine and failed to change the username, they kept typing their own password which was the wrong password for his account, thereby locking his account out. Or, he had mapped a drive on someone else's computer using his own account name to do so, and checked the "Reconnect At Login" box, so now that PC is repeatedly trying to authenticate without proper password throughout the day, and keeps locking his account out mysteriously. | This issue was resolved when the user went to all the various machines in his labs (he said there were many) and rebooted each one. This leads me to believe the cause was more likely the first one mentioned or something similar to it. |

Every time the user logs in to their workstation, a proxy login box opens up. If they try to login incorrectly too many times they may lock themselves out. | There are a variety of possible causes, but in a couple of cases we have seen a Kodak application running from the user's Startup group. This application tries to update itself from a website that is apparently blocked by our proxy. So the proxy login box opens up everytime the user logs in. | The best way to remove the problem is by uninstalling the
application (go to Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and remove
the Kodak software. Reboot and the problem should be gone. If the
user has to have this software you should be able to configure it
to not do the update. If the user is only using it to copy their
pictures from camera to PC, show them how to plug the camera in, turn it
on, and use Windows Explorer to copy the files. If there is no Kodak software, there may be some other app loading from the Startup group doing the same thing. It could also be spyware trying to access websites. |

All permissions to the local machine are gone. No matter what account you use to login to the computer (whether a local admin account or a network account even with admin rights) you cannot write anything to the C: drive. Therefore several messages popped up after logging in that mentioned "access denied" and/or "couldn't write" to particular location. In this particular case we kept getting an error message regarding the Altiris client and one regarding the Adobe Distiller which were both trying to write something to the hard drive and failing. This was on a Windows XP machine. | The ISS firewall application was doing something improperly and locking everyone out. This was just after an ISS update had been pushed out overnight. | I had to boot up in Safe mode and remove the Realsecure Agent from the Startup group and then delete everything I could in the C:\Program Files\ISS directory. I was unable to delete one file that was several directory levels inside of this. It was named "ICELSP_8.0.675.0.dll." I rebooted and everything worked OK. Then I reinstall ISS via Altiris Console and rebooted. Everything worked fine. One thing that seemed strange to me, that I believe was related to all this, was that when the end user logged back in for the first time, it created a new local profile and added ".AD" to the end of the user ID. The old profile was still there, untouched. |

When I go to Start/All Programs or to other menus in various Windows applications I don't see all the items in the list unless I click on those two little down arrows at the bottom of the list (they're called "Chevrons". Is there a way to get rid of these and see all the list items each time? | This is a default "feature" in Windows XP. It is available in W2k but I'm not sure if it is turned on by default or not. | In XP, right-click anywhere in a gray area on the taskbar and click
on "Properties"

"Start Menu" tab and check the "Classic Start Menu" item if it's not
already. Click on the "Customize" button and scroll to the bottom of
the "Advanced Start menu options" list and uncheck the "Used

item. Click on OK and you're all set.
In Windows 2000 it's even easier. Just right-click anywhere in a gray area on the taskbar and click on "Properties" (or again, click on Start/Settings/Taskbar and Start Menu...). Now uncheck the "Use Personalized Menus" and click on OK. That's it! |

After rebuilding a PC and starting Outlook for the first time I got an error message that it would not finish the install (configuration) of Outlook and to try again. (This might also happen after logging in to a PC for the first time and starting Outlook the first time with the new local profile.) | The way ISS (local firewall) is configured conflicts with configuring Outlook. Certain picture files (in this case, *.jpeg and *.jpg) do not display properly in Explorer Thumbnail view. In the case I was working on, I believe this happened when the client got an upgrade to Office 2003 while the ISS firewall was blocking some function it shouldn't have been. | For whatever reason, uninstalling Office, uninstalling or disabling ISS,
and reinstalling Office 2003 did not resolve this issue. After some Google research I found a registry
fix. I created some *.reg files rather than edit the registry directly. The contents of the "ShellEx_jpeg.reg"
I created is shown below. The other two reg files were identical except I replaced the ".jpeg" with
".jpe" and ".jpg". I named the other two files "ShellEx_jpe.reg" and "ShellEx_jpg.reg" respectively.

User is trying to delete some folders but keeps getting an error message and can't delete them. Even from a command prompt they won't delete. There is one or more files in the last directory of the path. But you can't delete, move, or rename these files either. | The problem is that the path/filename combination is too long. Windows (XP in this case) doesn't know how to handle this. | The solution is really pretty simple. Instead of trying to delete, move, or rename the file(s) in the last directory, just rename the directories further up the chain to something smaller. Once you make enough of the folders' names small enough to bring the whole path/filename combination into Windows ability to handle, you should be able to delete, rename, move, or whatever. |

User has Hummingbird Exceed on his PC, The Hummingbird Maestro NFS client, and a custom utility that grabs data off a Unix server and saves it to a *.csv text file on the Unix server. Then he opens this file in Excel. Normally Excel will convert it, but in this case Excel opens but there is no data. If he opens the text file in Notepad or even moves it to another location it will not show any of the data. The directory listing shows that it has data in it, but you can't see it in any way. If one of his co-workers opens the file first from their own PC, the file is ok and the data can be seen. He can even see the data after someone else opens the text file. But if he is the first one to open the text file in any way, it becomes unusable. | Apparently there was something wrong with his hard drive that was causing this issue. I can't explain what or how, but it finally boiled down to a defective hard drive. Before coming to this conclusion I had rebuilt the system twice after trying everything else. I even tested by ftp'ing the text file instead of copying it. It would work ok this way, but not if Windows got involved. After weeks of trying everything else I could think of, I tested the hard drive with the Bios self test and it failed. This was the only indication I saw of anything wrong with the drive. This user's co-worker had experienced the exact same symptoms a year or two before and said the only thing that fixed it was a new machine. My theory is that it wasn't the new machine that fixed the co-workers problem as much as it was the new hard drive in the new machine. | Replace the hard drive and rebuild. |

Then right-click in the headers and choose to dsiplay the Owner. Now look at the file and you should see what the owner ID is. The ID should help you find the person in Outlook or another way. If the person who has it opened currently has made any changes, they would be the owner. Locate that person and see if they do. If not, you might try making a copy of the file so the person trying to use it can use it for what they need currently. (Explain though that there are now two different copies of this file.) |

Can't boot my Windows 2000 or XP machine. Even when using a floppy disk with the three root system files (boot.ini, ntldr, ntdetect.com) it will not boot. | Tha master boot record or the boot sector on the boot partition may be corrupt. I've corrupted them myself on various dual-boot systems in particular. | You may be able to boot with the Windows 2000 or XP startup CD and

The shortcut key I created for a couple of icons no longer works. When I try to re-create the shortcut, it still won't work. | The shortcut key was made on a shortcut that was copied and has since been deleted. I.e. the original shortcut with associated shortcut key combo is gone even though you still have a copy of the original shortcut. Therefore the shortcut key is no longer available even if it looks like it is and even though it may show as being in use by the copy of the original shortcut. | Delete the original shortcut (note where it is pointing first) and any copies, logout and back in, then create a new shortcut and configure it for the keyboard combo you want as your shortcut keys. |

In Outlook 2002 every time I click on a menu item it doesn't display all the items in the menu. Instead it has those chevrons at the bottom hiding a few of the items in the list. | Somebody at Microsoft who had too much time and probably needed to justify his job thought up this really "neat" idea of hiding little-used menu items. And of course, in order to show off there "neat" idea, they turn the feature "on" by default. (This explanation of course, is just my guess. Who really knows why Microsoft has such a habit of making easy things more complicated?) (Can you tell how much I love Microsoft?) | 1. Go to Tools > Customize > Options
2. Check the "Always show full menus" item and click OK. I'm not sure if this works the same way in newer versions of Outlook. |

Similar to the item above, Windows XP hides seldom-used menu items by default. So if you want to see them, you have to move your mouse and click on the stupid chevrons at the bottom of the menu list. Argghhh! | See item 000337 above. | 1. Right-click in a blank space on the taskbar on the bottom of the screen.
2. Choose "Properties". 3. Click on the "Start Menu" tab. 4. Check the "Classic Start Menu" circle and click on the "Customize" button. 5. Under the "Advanced Start Menu items", scroll all the way to the bottom and uncheck the "Use Personalized Menu". (I didn't know I had personalized the menu items, did you?) 7. Click OK all the way out. |

When the user maximizes their Office app they can see the scroll
bars and arrows for the document they're working on ok. But when they
"restore" the application window to the previous size, they lose part of
the scroll bar (e.g. the down arrow or the right arrow, etc.).

User has the file window set to a non-maximized size while the application window is also non-maximized. The combination is configured in a way that they can't see all of the file window inside the application window. This is why when they maximize the app window they can see everything ok. | Either the user can resize the file window to a size they can see everything with or they can click on the file window "maximize" button (which is probably the easier thing to do). |

While installing XP Home edition from a c:\i386 directory I got a message about C:\i386\asms\Policy\msft\WINDOWS\NETWORKI\NETWORKI\NETWORKI "not being there" or something. So I checked for files in that location on my c: drive and on the CD I had copied the i386 directory from. The was no such i386\...\NETWORKI directory to begin with. There was not even a ...asms\52\Policy... directory in the path though there was a \i386\asms\msft\WINDOWS\NET directory on both c: and the CD. ... I rebooted the computer and it booted into an XP menu with XP setup/install as the second option. Though it seemed to be missing a number of files, I escaped past those and continued the install. After a while I ended up at an error message that said "Win32LastError is 14001" and could not continue the setup. | Not sure but I suspect it had something to do with the length of the path being too long. | Had to re-fdisk and format the drive, then run the "winnt.exe" executable from the CD's i386 directory. |

That failed too. I tested my main PC and it was working fine on the Internet. | The hub choked for some reason. After installing Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, the computer will not boot up into Windows. While working on a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop the mouse cursor started moving by itself to the upper-right corner or lower-left corner of the screen. After switching to a new cable internet and voip, combined, provider the wireless router would not work correctly. The router would hand out an IP address to a computer attached via cable or wifi OK, but neither the router nor computers could reach the internet. You could see from the router's webpage interface that it was not getting an IP address from the cable modem. The modem in this case was an Arris Touchstone TM502 Telephony Modem (cable modem and VOIP adapter combined). The cable company technician tried several times to reset the router but could not get it work with the modem. Per the customer, the tech finally concluded that the router was defective (even though it had been working previous to him arrival). | This particular telephony/cable modem grabs the MAC address of the first device it gets attached to, and holds onto that MAC address as the only device it will give an IP address to (at least via the ethernet port). Even if you unplug the modem and even if you reset the modem with it's reset button. The battery in the modem keeps power to the phone in case of power outages, but apparently also holds the memory of the MAC address. I can only assume this is by design. I'm not sure if this is typical of telephony/cable combo modems or not. Judging from what I saw in the modem's manual you could connect a second computer via the usb port on the modem, but this still would not resolve this problem after someone connecting the modem to the computer first. | The way I solved this was to:
Another possible way to solve this is to use the "MAC address cloning" function on the router (if it has such). The basic steps would be this: |

Couldn't get my new D-Link DIR-615 wireless router to work right. I configured it the way I thought it needed to be, but when I connected to it from one of my wireless laptops I couldn't get to the internet. Or I could, but DNS translations were not functioning. I could ping or browse to a site with the IP address (if I knew it) but couldn't get there using the DNS name. | I think the problem was that the IP addresses of my Comcast DNS servers was incorrect. | I saved the current configuration of the router which I was using at the time piggy-backed to my old router (which was functioning as my network's DNS server). This was in case I needed to set it back to this configuration. Then I disconnected the old router and plugged my new one into my cable modem and configured it using the web-based configuration wizard. It was then that I noticed the primary and secondary DNS (Comcast) server addresses were totally different than what they had been on my old router. This seemed to do the trick. |

On a Vista laptop the hard drive was partitioned into three parts. First one was a small one for recovery. Then the rest of the drive was divided in half. The first half was the C: drive and the second half was the D: and labelled as "Data". The problem was that the D: drive (in this case about 106Gigs) was full, but not showing any files to speak of, of any size. When you checked the properties of the drive, the pie chart would show up as fully used. But when you used Explorer to look at the drive and try to find what was filling it up, there were just a number of backup folders that showed up as empty. Couldn't even find any folders in them. Even using the command prompt in Administrator mode did not show any files of any size. I tried using the "attrib" command to see if the files were hidden, to no avail. When I deleted all of the backup folders I got more than half of the space back. But there was still something taking up about 45Gigs of space on D:. | Inside the $RECYCLE.BIN folder on D: there were tons of hidden sub-folders with 45Gigs worth of hidden (really hidden) *.zip files from backups. | I opened a command prompt as Administrator (Actually I finally configured this Vista laptop so I could login as Admin and then I logged in that way.). From the root of D: I could type: "dir $RECYCLE.BIN\*.zip /s"
and see all the *.zip files including the total space used by them all.
But if I changed into the $RECYCLE.BIN folder and typed: "dir *.zip /s"
it would not show me any files. I changed to the $RECYCLE.BIN folder
and tried to delete all the sub-folders with the "rd" command, with
several switches. Again, all to no avail. But when I changed
directories to the root and typed: "del *.zip /s" it deleted all the *.zip files on the drive and freed up all 45Gigs of space. (At
least I seem to remember that's the way I did it. If I'm wrong I just
have my "changing directories" backwards. But I'm pretty sure I
described this correctly.)
After fixing this I found an article on the web that described this problem and gave a couple of other ways to rectify it. Check this out -> full-D-drive.html. |

I have a batch file on my Windows7 laptop that uses the "net use"
command to delete the exisiting drive, if it exists, then re-map the
drive to my Linux box. Sometimes when I use the batch file I get this
error message (even though I know the drive is not currently mapped):
"System error 1219 has occurred. Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again.." |

Could not delete items in Windows Media Player (12) playlist. | I think it's a buggy feature of Windows 7. | I had to close Media Player, open Explorer and put this in the address bar: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player, and then delete all the items in the directory. Unfortunately not all of them would even delete because the "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" was running. So I had to close my current network connection in order to be able to turn the "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" off. Then I could delete the remaining files from the Media Player directory. |

When the user clicks on the "Select All" button (upper left-hand corner) in an Excel 2010 spreadsheet and then tries to do a sort, they get this error message: "The operation you are about to perform affects a large number of cells and may take a significant amount of time to complete. Are you sure you want to continue?" When they click on "OK" to continue, they get this error message: "Excel cannot complete this task with available resources. When using the same Excel file on a virtual PC or another PC without Excel 2003, these errors do not occur. | Unsure. Suspect this is a bug in Excel 2010. | The solution/work-around is to avoid using the "Select All" button and use the Ctrl+A keyboard combination to select everything without all the extra empty rows and columns. password, add the LDAP section back to the LocalSettings.php file again.
To make this process a little easier, make a copy of the LocalSettings.php with the LDAP settings section included, and name it "LocalSettings.withldap" and a copy without the LDAP settings section, and name it "LocalSettings.noldap". So now when you want to change the admin password (which you may never need to do again), you can just copy "LocalSettings.noldap" to "LocalSettings.php", go into the wiki and change the password, then copy the "LocalSettings.withldap" to "LocalSettings.php" and you're good to go. |

Windows 7 pro laptop kept booting to a black Windows Repair screen that said to insert the Windows 7 repair CD. When I inserted the repair disk I had downloaded, and booted to it, I would go through various methods to try to repair the 128Gig SSD drive. The built-in methods would not repair the problem and neither would any of the suggestions I found online that had command line tricks. Even after I reimaged the drive from a sysprepped Windows 7 pro computer with three partitions, and then ran Windows repairs, it still failed to solve the problem. | Not Sure | I finally wiped the hard drive with a Live Linux boot disk and the "dd" command. Then I installed a 64bit version of Kubuntu desktop to see if it would install or if the SSD drive was actually toast. Kubuntu installed and ran fine on the laptop. Windows XP desktop I was working on would boot to the Windows logo
and then start loading drivers. At a certain point it would reboot
itself. It didn't matter whether
you booted normally, DOS only mode, Safe mode, or any other. The same
thing would happen. As I worked on the PC it got to the point where it
would not boot much at all
any time a hard drive was connected. Didn't matter whether it was an
IDE or Sata drive. The power light would come on for a few seconds,
then go off for a few seconds,
then repeat over and over.
I did get it to boot and run Linux off of an 8Gig USB memory stick as long as no hard drive was connected. |
One resistor inside the power supply was swollen and bleeding. | I replaced the power supply and all was well. What seemed to be a corrupted OS was actually a bad power supply. |

My Windows 8.1 laptop would not recognize any usb devices. The wireless mouse was still working until I unplugged it's adapter from it's usb port and tried it in another usb port. Then even when I plugged it back into the port it was working on, it wouldn't detect it. | I suspect some MS update did something to mess this up, but don't know for sure. | I opened device manager and deleted all the USB devices listed, then rebooted the laptop. When it came back up, all the usb devices were back in place in the device manager and my wireless usb mouse was working right away. |

I was trying to change IME bios settings on an MPC Clientpro 365 PC, but didn't know the password. | NA | I opened the case, removed the CMOS battery, held a paper clip across the battery terminals to short it, and held the power button in; all for about thirty seconds. When I was done I put the battery back, closed the PC, re-connected all the cables and botted up into the bios. When I got into the IME section of the bios I had to use "admin" as the default password and then was able to change the password and make the changes I needed. (I may not have tried "admin" as the password before going through all this, but ...) |

Whenever trying to login to an online bank account you would put in the ID and password and instead of logging in it would give webpage with an error message that Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and something about diagnostics. You could see in the address bar that the URL was "https://cm.netteller.com/login2008/Authentication ...". I tried with accounts at two different banks. I also tried with a make believe ID and password. So it wasn't specific to one account or one bank. | I'm not sure, but I think some security setting or antivirus setting related to I.E. had been changed and the "cm.netteller.com" site was blocked. If not this, it was some sort of I.E. setting/configuration. I could login with Firefox. | Resetting I.E. back to default settings/configuration resolved this problem. I was unable to login to my web server hosted by 1and1.com. I could not display any of my webpages, could not ssh to it, or connect to it in any way from any of the computers or even my android phone. But I had someone in another location get on my web pages without any trouble. So I tried getting onto my website using the Tor anonymous browser. That worked fine. | I figured for some reason my IP address at home was being blocked on 1and1's servers. | After a couple of emails to and from 1and1 tech support, they unblocked it. I could have reset my IP address using my web-based router config, but since I have the current IP pointing to my own web server I really didn't want to go through the process of changing that. |

How can I fix a desktop computer power supply to run if not connected to any motherboard. (In this case I was trying to use another power supply to power extra hard drives outside the computer case.) | N/A | Make a connection between two wires on the connector that normally
connects to the motherboard. Use a paper clip to complete a circuit
between the green wire connection and either a black wire connection on
either side of the green or the blue wire connector two wires away from
the green. (see picture) Instructions I read said to connect the green
to one of the black wires on either side. But I discovered in testing
that some power supplies used the blue wire instead.

On this webpage with multiple columns and rows (using frames), the far right column ran off the page so that I would have to scroll to the right to see the whole page. This was not the way I had originally designed it. | One of the entries far down the document was using the "pre" and slash "pre" tags in the far right column entry. This caused that column to be whatever the whole width of the text was inside the "pre" tags. | I removed the "pre" tags and edited as necessary. |

The mouse cursor on a Dell Latitude D610 laptop kept moving off to one side or another of the screen. Whether using a mouse, touchpad, or the keyboard button, I could not control the mouse. Sometimes I could get control back after messing with the mouse, but this kept happening. Even when I booted with a Linux live CD I got the same results. | It had something to do with a defective keyboard pointing stick. (This one was missing the top of the stick. But other comments I saw on the web didn't mention this piece missing.) | With the touchpad drivers installed you can go into the mouse settings in Control Panel and disable the "Pointing Stick". That took care of the problem. |

When I turned my laptop on this morning I could not connect to the internet with my wifi connection. I could get places within my home network, but not the internet. When I connected via an ethernet cable it worked fine. I tried all the typical things I normally would, all to no avail. I even tried connecting to a hidden wifi router with no success. When I did an "ipconfig" from a command prompt the IP address was a 169 address. | Something was wrong with the wifi driver even though the device manager didn't show any problem. | I download the latest wireless driver for my laptop from the manufacturer's web site, removed the old driver and installed the new one. I had an ASUS desktop that would not turn on fully when I hit the power button. The fans would turn on, but the power light did not come on and the system did not boot up. Sometime if I hit the side or top of the case it would jar it into starting fully. Sometimes I would turn it off completely and try again until it would come on. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason. Then I opened the case and tried pushing down on the cpu at the same time I turned it on. This seemed to work more frequently. | Cpu might not have been seated soundly? Our Lenovo laptop would not turn on at all if the battery was in the laptop. This happened after I bought a new battery for it. When I put the new battery in, even after charging it fully, and even with the ac adapter plugged in, the laptop just would not turn on. Pushing the power button did absolutely nothing. No lights, no nothing. So I put the old battery in and even though it used to power on with the ac adapter, now it did nothing. | Ac adapter did not have the necessary output power to turn laptop on while also charging the battery. | I found another ac adapter that had a higher output amount and that worked. (The bad adapter was a12v output while the good one was 20v output.) |

A Windows 10 computer would not boot into Windows. This was originally a Windows 7 PC that was updated to 10. No matter what option I picked with all the options available at the big blue options screen, it kept saying it couldn't fix it. When I chose to boot into a Dos prompt, it left me at a Z: drive and neither the Z: drive nor the C: drive had a full Windows folder on it. All the Windows folder had it in was one sub-folder. (I forget what is was called. Maybe "opt"?) I finally tried to re0install Windows 10 off of my Windows 10 install usb key. That failed too. | I think this computer was shut down improperly by just turning off the power. And one message I saw at one point in my research made it look like the computer had been in hibernation when it was turned off. | I finally entered the Dos prompt option (I think while I had booted off of my Windows 10 usb drive) and found that there was an E: drive that seemed to have a lot more stuff on it than C: or X: (but I didn't think to compare at the time.) I ran chkdks /f on the E: drive and then rebooted. Windows booted up finally, but had some weird issues. After getting all the Windows updates that were available, everything seemed to work fine. (Before the updates, one thing that didn't work was the start button.) |

I couldn't get a desktop PC to boot to the bootable Windows 10 usb stick that I had. (It wouldn't boot to the Win 10 dvd I had either but that may have been because of the way a DVD created on one drive doesn't always work on a different drive.) | Related to the EFI/UEFI bioses on computers. | I set the bios on the computer to "legacy" mode and then it booted to the usb stick. |

One of my customers had a Dell laptop that only had a 32G hard drive. The drive was an eMMC drive, soldered on the motherboard and there was no way to replace it with a larger drive. So with only MS Office installed and all the customers files being stored on an SD card, there was still too little space left on the hard drive to run the latest Windows 10 update. | Dell was stupid in building a laptop which only had a 32G hard drive and no way to upgrade! | After some research I found someone else who had run into this problem and they downloaded the MS "Windows Creation Tool" for Windows 10 and re-installed Windows 10 from that. That left more space available (w/o all the Dell junk). I think I can also free up more space using item 535 right above this entry. I also moved the user files/folders location to the SD card again. A Toshiba Satellite L15W laptop was stuck at the Toshiba screen when booting up. After doing as much troubleshooting as I could think to do, it would get past the Toshiba screen and ask you to put in a bootable drive. I kept trying to boot to a usb boot stick or even a bootable CD/DVD, all to no avail. The laptop just didn't recognize any boot device. | It needed a UEFI boot device. | I put my Windows 10 install dvd in my external usb dvd drive and it booted up and started the Windows 10 install. Since I could not fix the owner's password for their Microsoft Account (which was what they had originally setup on this laptop), I was trying to create a new local account. Unfortunately Microsoft has configured the Home version of Windows 10 to not allow you to use the "Local Users and Groups" snapin. | Another one of MS's ways to prevent users from keeping their info private. | I was able to use the "netplwiz.exe" command from a command prompt (or Windows key + r) and that utility allowed me to start the process that a new install uses to create an account. While working on an Acer Aspire 7741Z-4643 laptop the touchpad stopped working at one point. | My mistake | I had been experimenting with the Fn + function keys. I thought the F7 key icon was for turning the touch screen on/off. But it wasn't a touch screen. The little icon on the F7 key was referring to the touchpad. So I had unwittingly turned the touchpad off. Then, since I had been using a cordless mouse, I wasn't aware I has turned the touchpad off. After switching routers (along with internet providers) I could not reconfigure the Canon LBP 6030w wifi printer that I had. The IP address it had assigned to it was on a different subnet than the new router was using. When I tried to run the Canon install utility it would not allow me to use a usb connection between the printer and PC I was using to try to configure it. (On top of that all, I could NOT find anything on the internet that solved this problem or suggested how to set this printer back to factory default. Not even on Canon's website!!!) | The reason was because my PC was connected via ethernet instead of wirelessly. (The utility did not have an option for this and the printer did not have an ethernet connection for another option.) | I'm not sure if I needed to do this, but I think I disabled the previous wifi settings that were on the printer. I think I did this by holding the wifi button down with the power button on the printer for 5 to 10 seconds. ... Anyhow, once I connected my PC to our network via a wifi connection, I chose the wifi option in the Canon install utility and all went well. |

While trying to refurbished a Windows 10 laptop, I could not get it to charge the battery. The battery taskbar util would show that the laptop was plugged in but not charging the battery. I tried uninstalling the two battery drivers in device manager, and rebooting so new drivers would be automatically installed after the reboot (which I have seen resolve this issue in the past), but this failed to work. (Even when I held the power button down for 20 seconds or more while laptop was powered down, to drain any left-over power.) | Was using wrong ac adapter. | At one point while I was trying to update manufacturer's drivers, I got a message that I needed the manufacturers ac adapter with 65W or more. I tried using the controls on that monitor to tell it to use the DVI cable I had plugged in to the PC, but that didn't solve the problem. It would just default automatically back to the VGA cable/port. | Apparently this monitor didn't like having a VGA cable hooked up to itself when I was telling it to use the DVI cable. | Once I disconnected the VGA cable from the monitor, Windows displayed fine and I could arrange the two displays as I desired. |

Just a while before someone was coming to buy a Windows 10 laptop from me, I could not get the laptop to stay turned on. Every time I would turn it on, it would boot up into Windows and after finally loaded a message would pop up that said "Locking" and then it would shut down. This was a laptop that I advertised as having to keep plugged in because even with a brand new battery and ac adapter, it always said battery is plugged in, but not charging. | I think the battery connection inside the laptop battery compartment, must have been faulty. | I removed the new battery I had bought previously (hoping it would work) and booted without any battery and the problem went away. |

When we turned on our TCL big screen TV, we got sound but no picture. | Not sure why this happens. Last night, during a thunderstorm, our power went out for about 1 or 2 seconds. Our TCL tv had been on at the time, and worked fine when we turned it on again. But the next morning when we turned it on, the sound came on, but there was no picture. | Just like the previous item, don't know why there is no picture. (I should have checked the other two hdmi connections, but didn't think of that til now.) | I unplugged all three hdmi cables from the back of the tv. Then I held the power button, on back of the tv, for 60 seconds. Made sure to do this while the tv power cord was still plugged in (red power light on tv was on). Plugged all three hdmi cables back in and turned tv on. It worked!!! |

When trying to install Windows 10 on a laptop, it kept failing and showing a blue screen of death with an error message of "Stop code:0xc000021a". | In this case the hard drive must have had some problem. From the research I did it looks like it is typically a hardware issue. | I replaced the hard drive with another and Windows 10 installed without any problems. |

One of my customers was trying to log in to an online account for Microsoft Office-365 using his Microsoft account. But it kept failing even though he knew he was using the correct email address and password. | Turns out Microsoft was having trouble on their end. I got an older iMac that kept booting to a Linux dvd. A little research told me there was no internal hard drive. But I couldn't figure out how to eject the dvd so I could try to boot to something else (like one of my bootable usb sticks). | Lack of Apple tech knowledge. | After a little online research I found that as soon as I heard the bootup chime, I had to hold the left mouse button down until the dvd ejected itself. |

Customer's Windows 10 PC kept booting to a BSOD off and on. When I checked the event viewer Windows messages I kept seeing this error: "The Application-Specific Permission Settings do not Grant Local Activation Permission for the COM Server Application". 2. Now type net user "account" /delete where "account" is the name of the account you are deleting. (Be sure to use the quotes around the name.) |

I couldn't print to my Brother printer from my Linux laptop. (I could print to it from linux my server because it was connected via usb cable.) | The IP address on the printer had been changed somehow. Not sure why. | I printed a printer configuration page on the printer by hitting the green "Go" button 3 times quickly. That gave me it's current IP address. Then I was able to open the printers web-based configuration page and change the IP address that I had had it set to before. Then I was able to re-install the printer on my laptop using the IP address. |

After replacing our Samsung cell phones with 5G Nokia cell phones, every time I tried to send a photo in a text it would fail to send the text. (I thought I got mine and Lois' network settings on the phones fixed to solve this problem, but the problem returned.) | Not sure if there is still a setting I could change to fix this. | What I learned to do was start the text first and then add a photo with the plus sign instead of opening the photo first and trying to send it that way. |
